A local Belgian mayor was fined €2000 for having used e-mail addresses obtained for the exercise of his office for electoral campaign purposes. This is the first financial penalty imposed in Belgium for non-compliance with the European General Regulations on Data Protection (GDPR), better known by the abbreviation GDPR. The Data Protection Authority (ODA), the former Commission for the Protection of Privacy, sees this “moderate” fine as a message to all those responsible for processing.
